ARTIST | Alison Van Pelt

Alison Van Pelt began this work with a perfectly painted, photo-realistic nude, then layered a scrim of linear marks over its surface to obscure the image beneath. The figure’s pose is free and open, a physical stance that mirrors a psychological state – open to infinite possibilities. The blurred paint represents a breakdown of barriers and constriction, the disintegration of the ties that bind us.

In my mind this subject is seated in blissful meditation. She’s experiencing waves of euphoria, an overwhelming sense of happiness, joy and well-being. The practice of yoga and meditation are designed to generate these feelings. Originally, the reason for the development of the physical practice of yoga was to prepare the body for meditation and euphoria. In this blissful state there’s an awareness that everything is energy and that everything is connected. Ancient Vedics in India knew this and science has caught up to validate these ideas. Breaking the imagery down and blending it all together is my way of illustrating that energetic connection.
