FREE FALL
ARTIST | Alison Van Pelt
Alison Van Pelt began this work with a perfectly painted, photo-realistic nude, then layered a scrim of linear marks over its surface to obscure the image beneath. The figure’s pose is free and open, a physical stance that mirrors a psychological state – open to infinite possibilities. The blurred paint represents a breakdown of barriers and constriction, the disintegration of the ties that bind us.
DETAIL
The path of a body in free fall, as I imagine this figure to be, is under the force of gravity only. Free falling objects do not encounter any resistance. A spacecraft in space with no propulsion is in free fall. Skydivers liken the sensation of freefall to how they imagine it would feel to fly or float on a cushion of air. This figure has surrendered. She’s following the path of least resistance. In free fall, the way to the best outcome is to let go.
