ARTIST | Alison Van Pelt

Alison Van Pelt began this work with a perfectly painted, photo-realistic nude, then layered a scrim of linear marks over its surface to obscure the image beneath. The figure’s pose is free and open, a physical stance that mirrors a psychological state – open to infinite possibilities. The blurred paint represents a breakdown of barriers and constriction, the disintegration of the ties that bind us.

DETAIL

The meaning of Ke ala in Hawaiian is The Way. I went to Hawaii in my late teens This painting depicts what I was feeling at that time in my life: the relief and excitement of finding my way. I was wild and free but I was also lost. The real freedom came from having clarity and having a goal. I learned that my fantasy could be a reality because I saw someone living it. I found everything I wanted to work toward - Ke ala
